Nude Astronomy Weekend, May 5-6, 2018

Well it’s a case of third time lucky – the skies ARE going to co-operate for us this time, and we are going to get to enjoy the best the night sky has to offer. And Rod is bringing his brand new 20 inch mirror computerised telescope!

Led by the amateur astronomers who are members of Naturi, we are going to be treated to night tours of planets, open star clusters, globular clusters, emission nebulae and even some galaxies. If you know nothing, lots, or somewhere in-between about astronomy, it does not matter – all are welcome, and everyone is bound to have a great time.

We are planning a full weekend gathering, so if you can plan to stay over the whole weekend. The astronomy event will be on the Saturday night, and we will have a bring your own dinner together in the Clubhouse before we start the night tours. Our May monthly members meeting will be at 11am on Sunday as usual.

A few tips for stargazing:

*buy some red cellophane to put over your torch – white light is the enemy of dark adaption, and we want to see as much as we can in the night sky, whereas red light is fine.

*bring some warm clothing, as it gets pretty cold standing around at night time at that time of year. Only the hardiest nudists will want to be naked when we are outside at night!

  1. Well, what a great weekend! Thanks to everyone for their great company. We had warm weather, and a nice roll up of about 18 people, to share the sunshine and the stars!

    I am just so relieved that we had clear skies finally! Some of the favourite objects from the night included Omega Centauri, Jupiter, the Moon, Saturn, Ghost of Jupiter Planetary Nebula, Eta Carinae, and Tarantula Nebula. Using our “time machine” we were able to see galaxies that were 30 million light years away, meaning we were effectively travelling back in time, viewing those objects as they looked 30 million years ago, when the light signal that we finally perceived with our eyes last Saturday left that object to begin its long journey to us.

    Thanks to Phil also for sharing great views of Jupiter through his scope, and as always Bazz & Sue for great coffee (and food :-)).

  4. Hi everyone!

    The conditions are looking very good – clear skies and low winds forecast, so we should be in for a treat tonight! The best time for us to observe deep sky objects will be between 7pm and 9.30pm, and then after this we can enjoy great views of Jupiter and the Moon will start to rise, which is a spectacular sight. So have dinner on the early side if you want to make the most of the conditions. AND – bring warm clothes for observing (you can take them off again when we get back inside later on!)
